What is Trauma

Dr. Peter Levine is a pioneer in the field of trauma and his work is profound to clinicians and clients.

Dr. Levine does a great job in defining trauma in very simple terms. He defines trauma as: when our ability to respond to a perceived threat is in some way overwhelmed.  The inability to adequately respond can impact people in obvious ways, as well as subtle ways.

Trauma is about the loss of connection to ourselves, our bodies, our families, to others and to the world around us.  The loss of connection doesn’t happen immediately but gradually…gradually we become used to the loss of connection.  Which can be scary because you know something is not right until sometimes it is too late.

We eventually learn that our choices become limited as we avoid: certain feelings, people, situations and places.  We loss the vitality and potential for the fulfillment of our dreams.

It is important Dr. Levine writes to know the common symptoms of trauma…self awareness is one of the first keys to overcoming trauma.  Self-awareness helps us to remember that something inside isn’t right and needs attention and when we don’t listen is when trauma continues and persists.
